Minnie Davis Obituary

Minnie Gates Davis, affectionately known by family and friends as “Mimmy,” was blessed by God with the gift of LOVE. She demonstrated love by the way she embraced her family and community. At one time she was the community’s “hair dresser.” Later she baked and decorated cakes for special occasions. She joined New Bethel AME church and received Christ as Savior at an early age. At New Bethel, she lovingly was a member of the Steward Board, Pulpit Aid Club, the Senior Missionary Society, Senior Citizens Circle of Friends and the Stewardess Board, Emeritus.

Minnie graduated from Lexington Rosenwald High School in 1946. She received her Cosmetology license in 1956, a Diploma in Industrial Education in 1972, and she later received her Continuing Education credits in Sewing at Lexington Vocational School.

Minnie was preceded in death by her parents: Cleophus Gates Black, Norman Padgett, and Stepfather, Freddie Black Sr.; Her brothers, Paul E. Gates and Heyward G. Black; Her Husband, Herbert H. Davis; and children, Ella Vernice Gates, Marvula Jenelle Davis, Barbara H. Keisler and Jimmy Lewis Wise (Virginia) and grand daughter, Beverly Williams also preceded her in death.

Left to cherish the memories of the life she lived is her son: Eddie D. Davis Sr. (Rachel); Daughters, Marilyn B. Davis, and Kathy C. Davis; Brothers, Freddie H. Black, Jr. (Catherine) Allen R. Black; Sister, Mary Alice Black all of Lexington, SC.  Adopted Sister – Evelyn P. Smith Newton Falls, Ohio; Grandchildren – Norman Justin Scott Davis, George Damon-Barrett Davis, Marcus O. Davis, Kristopher R. Davis, Sharia C. Davis, Eddie Damon Davis, Jr. Chelsea Davis, Melanie Williams, and Matea Keisler, Sonya Davis Brown; Goddaughters: – Kristen Gates, April Gardner, Greta Robinson. Godson: -Alfred Brown; Son-in-law Clayry Keisler; Special Friends – Mrs. Nathalee Jones, Mrs. Thelma Strother, Mrs. Elaine Johnson, Mrs. Ernestine Yeadon.  Special Cousins – Woodrow and Mary Jackson, Sylvia Gates, Patricia Briggs and Frank B Felder, Jr.; 22 Great grands and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mrs. Davis will be held on Monday May 29, 11AM at New Bethel AME Church with committal services to follow at Springhill AME Church Cemetery.  Afterwards the family will be accepting friends and well-wishers at the Community Center in Lexington, SC.  The J H Robinson Funeral Home will be open for viewing on Sunday from 2 to 6 pm.
