Mrs. Mary M. Johnson, daughter of the late Johnny Kemp and Mary Lou Hall, was born April 25, 1933, in
the town of Gilbert in Lexington County, SC. She departed this early life on Monday, January 03, 2022,
at her home in Lexington, SC.
She was joined in Holy Matrimony to the late John David Johnson sixty-seven years ago and to their
union of love, they were blessed with the birth of 7 beautiful children.
Mary attended the Hollow Creek Public Schools in Lexington County, SC. At an early age she accepted
Christ as her personal Savior and joined Mt. Olive C.M.E. Church, Lexington, SC. She was a dedicated
and faithful Class Leader, St. Paul Ushers Union Member, Missionary Society Member, Senior Choir
Member, and Director of the Morning Glories Youth Choir.
Mary was also the eldest member of the Ruth Chapter #251, Lexington, Order of the Eastern Star under
the leadership of Beauty Grand Chapter, Order of Eastern Star- State of South Carolina – FAAYM, Prince
Hall Origin, National Compact, USA.
Mary was a dedicated and dependable employee of several Lexington County Businesses including
Walter P. Rawls and Sons (35 years), Four Oaks Farms, and Porky D’s BBQ (10 years). She was a
dedicated mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend. Her loving and kind spirit will
forever live in the hearts of all who loved and knew her.
In addition to her late husband Mary was also predeceased by three children, John, Vivian, and Michael
Johnson and three grandchildren, Gregory Jones, Willie McDaniel Jr., and Vivian Johnson.
Mary leaves to cherish her loving memory and legacy, her loving and devoted children, son, Willie
James (Jamie) Hendrix of San Diego, California; daughters, Juanita Johnson of Irvington, NJ, Berthina
Fleeton and Bertha Smith Davis of Lexington, SC; stepdaughter, Caroline Sistrunk of Harlem, NY; sister,
Emma Hendrix of Columbia, SC; a special granddaughter, Carla Cook of Columbia, SC who was raised as
a daughter in the home; daughter-in-law, Rebecca Johnson of Columbia, SC; aunt, Alline Cook of
Lexington, SC; uncle, Robert L. Cook of Lexington, SC; three special nieces, Bonnie Leven (Reginald) of
NJ, Dorothy (Isaiah) Green and Barbara Lytes of Lexington, SC; a special great nephew, Darnell Lytes of
Lexington, SC; a goddaughter, Mary Bannerman of Lexington, SC; 10 additional grandchildren, Russell
(Tarangela) Cook, Michael Johnson, Melvin Johnson, Bernard Johnson and Angie McDaniel of
Irvington, NJ, Tabitha Powell of Norristown, PA, Landon Smith and Sawnese Hawthorne of Columbia,
SC, Shirlaine(Roy) Cook-Carroll of Mableton, GA and Delano Hendrix of San Diego, CA; 33 great
grandchildren; 22 great-great grandchildren; and a host of nephews, nieces, great nephews, great
nieces, great-great nephews, and great-great nieces and other loving relatives and dear friends.
