Obituary

Life's Reflections Reverend Alvin Hammonds was born on August 14, 1938, in Aiken County, to the late Sam Jones and Maggie Wells Hammonds. The oldest of twin brothers and the fourth of five children, Alvin developed a humorous and good-natured personality at a young age. Educated in the Aiken County School systems, Alvin graduated from A.L. Corbitt High School in 1957. He later attended Morris College in Sumter, SC. After moving to New York for a brief period, he returned to South Carolina and was employed at the Savannah River Site (SRS). A hard working and dedicated individual, Mr. Hammonds worked faithfully at Savannah River Site for 27 years. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at a young age at Saron Baptist Church. Mr. Hammonds relationship with Christ became more personal after he recognized and accepted the distinct "call of God" upon his life to minister the gospel. As he worked to glorify and build the kingdom of Heaven, Reverend Hammonds encountered and changed many lives with his kind-hearted ways. His ministerial career entailed pastoring Pleasant Hill Baptist Church of Saluda, SC, Chalk Hill Baptist Church of Wagener, SC, and Zion Hill Baptist Church of Kitchings Mill, SC. Throughout the years, he was presented many earthly rewards and certificates for his dedicated ministry and community activities, but his heavenly reward was what he cared about the most. On March 23, 2014, God stretched out His hand of love and called home his "good and faithful servant," Reverend Alvin Hammonds. Those who predeceased him were his brother Elmer Hammonds and his sister Johnnie Mae Hammonds Tobin. Those he left behind to cherish his beloved memories are: his wife, Reverend Marie N. Hammonds of New Ellenton, SC; three sons: Alvin K. (Cathy) Hammonds of Rex, GA, Warren (Sonya) Hammonds of Cheltenhem, MD, Chaz M. Hammonds of Aiken, SC; two daughters: Tonya C. Hammonds of Norcross, GA, and Amanda V. Hammonds of Greer, SC; sister: Evangelist Estelle Hammonds Smith of Wagener, SC; brother: Albert Hammonds of Columbia, SC; two brother-in-laws, two sister-in-laws, seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, one Godson: Herbert Oliphant of Aiken, SC, a host of nieces and nephews, other loving relatives, and many caring friends.
