Obituary

Phoebe Caldwell Dunn, age 85, beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away after a brief illness on December 15, 2023.

Phoebe was born on January 25, 1938, in Ashland, Kentucky, and was an only child for her first seven years of life. Her status abruptly changed when she arrived home from school one day to find a newborn baby boy, Timothy. Her parents had not prepared her for this tiny invader, so it was a complete surprise that she had a sibling. As an adult, Phoebe would say that he continued to be a complete surprise. Elsie had her third child, Ruth, three years later.

As a child, Phoebe studied piano and discovered she had "perfect pitch," which is the ability to hear what she saw in printed music and to see what she heard. When she was a teenager, her piano teacher would play a piece unknown to her, and Phoebe would perform the same without seeing the printed music.

She attended Carson Newman College, majoring in music. In 1960, she married her one true love, William Sherrell Dunn. They would be married for 62 years until he died in 2022.

Phoebe became a Christian as a child, and her faith was central to her life. Serving others in ministry was her passion - whether through music, prayer, teaching, or mentoring. She particularly loved serving beside her husband for most of their marriage. They spent their last 35 years in Augusta, GA, serving at Curtis Baptist Church.

Phoebe is survived by her son, Steven (Elizabeth "Betsy") Dunn, and daughter, Lisa (Andrew) Weems.

Steven and Elizabeth's children are Brent (Lindsey) Dunn, Ryan Dunn, Grace Dunn, and Nora Dunn.

Lisa (Dunn) and Andrew Weems' children are Drew Weems, Rachel (Weems) Woods (Jeremy), Seth Weems, Caleb Weems, and Rebecca Weems.

Phoebe is also survived by her brother, Timothy Caldwell (Barbara Dixon), and sister, Ruth (Caldwell) Lawson (Bob). Her father and mother, Bert and Elsie Caldwell, preceded her in death.

The funeral service will be held Saturday, January 13, 2024, at 11:00 A.M. at Curtis Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Sterling officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before the service, beginning at 10:00 A.M., at the church. Interment will follow the service at Westover Memorial Park. Instead of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Church Community Ministry at Curtis Baptist Church - a ministry that cares for the community's people and their physical and spiritual needs - and was very important to Phoebe and her late husband, Sherrell.
