Obituary

Obituary of Mildred Addie Thomas Mildred Addie Tyler Thomas was born on December 3, 1921 in Orangeburg County, South Carolina. She was the sixth child born to Timothy and Olivia Melvenia Tyler. She attended school in Wagener, South Carolina. All of her siblings preceded her in death. In the early 1940s, she moved to Washington, D.C. where she met and married Warren Jerome Thomas. From this union, three children were born: John Timothy, Charles Edward (deceased) and Kathryn Naomi. Being her own woman, and allowing no one to rule over her, she decided to follow her own goals. Mildred gave her young babies over to her parents in South Carolina and moved to New York in pursuit of a better life for herself and her young family. Mildred became employed as a factory worker for Bent Glass Works, where she worked until retirement. Years would pass before she was able to save enough money to bring her children to live with her. Mildred worked tirelessly and held on to her faith. Her favorite scripture was Psalm 23. Eventually, another of her goals was met; she and her family were able to come together under one roof. And if it was only a pot of soup, she made sure that she was able to provide for her children. As a young woman, she enjoyed all aspects of her life with family and friends. Weekends would come with much music and dancing. Mildred loved listening to Sam Cook and Brook Benton on her record player. She shared her thoughts and gave you advice even if you did not want to hear it. One of her last statements was, "no fighting." Mildred attended several churches in the Jamaica area but settled at Calvary Baptist Church where she maintained her membership since 2005. It was at Calvary that she found Christ and she remained a member until her transition from this earthly home. One of Mildred's hobbies was sewing, and over the past twenty years, she made quilts for her family, friends, and neighbors. Now that she has transitioned after 94 years here on this earth, Mildred has left behind many unfinished quilts but her pattern of quilting is now complete. She leaves to cherish her memory: one son, John; daughter, Kathryn; daughter-in-law, Karen (Charles -deceased): grandchildren: Olivia (Jimmy), Tijuan, Jennifer, Kenneth (LaTisha), Willonda (Charles, Jr. - deceased), Tonyetta, and many great-grands, great-great grands, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
