Mattie Gallman Pontoo, daughter of Carrie Mae Monts Gallman Gray and the late Brady Gallman, Jr., was born in Prosperity, South Carolina (Newberry County) on January 24, 1953. She answered the Master's call on Monday, October 15, 2018 in Tallassee, AL. She married the late Abraham Pontoo, Jr. on May 17, 1973. Mattie attended Newberry County Public Schools, Friendship Jr. College (Rock Hill, SC) and Voorhees College (Denmark, SC) where she received her degree in Organizational Management. At an early age, Mattie joined Mt. Moriah AME Church. Later, she joined Greater Smyrna (Harvest of Love) and then Antioch Bible Way Church where she served as Missionary and Mother of the Church. Mattie was employed with several facilities in Aiken County. Mrs. Mattie Pontoo leaves to cherish her memory, her loving mother, Carrie Mae Gray; two sons, Aubrey T. (Tara) Pontoo of Tallassee, AL, Paris D. Pontoo of Aiken, SC; one daughter, Ntozake S. Johnson of Aiken, SC; step-father-in-law, Lou Allen Walker; one sister, Yvonne Gallman of Columbia, SC; one brother, George (Sharon) Gallman of Hopkins, SC; one sister-in-law, Virginia Pontoo; three brothers-in-law, Evan Pontoo, Llewellyn (Mary) Pontoo, and Lonell Pontoo; eight grandchildren, one great grandchild, several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and a host of godchildren.
The Pontoo family will be accepting friends and well-wishers at the J.H. Robinson Funeral Home, 190 Railroad Ave., Wagener, SC on Friday October 19, 2018, from 5 to 7 pm. Funeral Services for Mrs Mattie Pontoo will be held on Saturday, October 20, 1:00 pm at the Antioch Bible Way Church, 614 Seivern Rd., Wagener SC. Viewing at the church will be from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm the day of services.
