Obituary

Mannie James Casteal, Jr.,69, passed away quietly as his home at 3120 Whetstone Road, North SC, after a succumbing to a battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his wife and other close relatives. He was born on April 26, 1946, in Lexington County to the late Katherine and late Mannie James Casteal, Sr. Mr. Casteal was educated in the public schools of Lexington County. He was a Class of '65 graduate from Monroe Pinkney High School in Swansea, SC. At an early age, he fell in love with the game of baseball and enjoyed many years of success around the game with family and neighborhood friends. He loved laugh and talk about the 'good ol days' of Chapel Hill Baseball. "Peter Rabbit" as he was called by many throughout the community, learned welding as a young boy. He and all of his brothers learned this trade under the guidance of their father. He went on to become a master welder, and enjoyed a long career in welding, that took him all over the United States. He enjoyed singing gospel music and early in his life he and his friends formed a quartet group. They called themselves "The Highway Travelers". Mannie was united in holy matrimony to Juanita Austin on December 23, 1985. Brother Pete was a lifelong member of the Flora Branch Baptist Church and served the church as a trustee, choir member, and an usher. His happy-go-lucky demeanor will be sorely missed from the pastor, members and the community. He is preceded in death by his parents. Left to cherish his fond memories of their beloved "Bubba"are: his wife, Juanita A. Casteal, of the home, his daughter Kimberly (Marlon) Davis of Pelion, SC, two sisters, Syblean C. Johnson of the Chapel Hill Community, and Alice (Bobby) Schofield of West Columbia, SC; five brothers, Harvey (Elaine) Jackson of Brooklyn, NY, Rogers (Martha) Casteal, Sr. of Springfield, SC, Eddie (Margaret) Brown of Augusta, Ga, Clarence (Patricia ) Casteal of the Chapel Hill Community, and Billie M.(Betty) Casteal of Springfield, SC; five brothers-in-laws, Johnny Lee (Eartha) Austin, Ray (Brenda) Austin, Donald Austin, Larry (Mary) Livingston, Terry Jones all of Pelion, SC, Randy (Ellen) Austin of Chapin, SC; one sister-in-law Linda (Robert) Seawright of Columbia, SC. one grandson, Xavian Davis, two uncles, John C. Milhouse of Columbia, SC and Isaac (Jerlene) Casteal of North, SC, one aunt, Edna Milhouse of Salley, SC, a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Service Information

Visitation will be held on Monday, August 17th 2015 from 3:00pm until 7:00pm at the J.H. Robinson Funeral Home, 190 Railroad Avenue, Wagener, SC. The Homegoing Celebration for Mr. Mannie James Casteal, Jr. will be held on Tuesday, August 18th, 2015 1:00pm at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, 505 S Church St, Swansea, SC 29160. The Committal Service will be held at Flora Branch Baptist Church, 586 Begonia Rd, North, SC 29112. Following the committal, there will be a repass held within the church dining hall. The church will be open one hour prior to the service for viewing.
