Obituary

Johnny Julius Morgan, Sr., entered into eternal rest on March 4, 2025, in Decatur, GA, at the age of 84. Johnny was a beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He lived a life full of love and laughter.

Johnny was born on Feb. 22, 1941, in Salley, SC, as the third youngest of eight children to Sallie Mae and Coleman Morgan. From a young age, Johnny shouldered great responsibility. He stepped into the role of protector and provider after the passing of his father when Johnny was just 9 years old. Johnny's hardworking nature was evident as he drove the local school bus for his school, A.L. Corbett High School, and worked tirelessly on the family farm, all while supporting his mother and siblings. He was known to sit on two pillows to reach the wheel of the family vehicle as a young child. Johnny's work ethic and dedication to his family earned him the respect of his community.

Throughout his life, Johnny's faith in God and love for his family remained steadfast. He was a devoted member of the Jerusalem Branch Baptist Church in Salley, SC. Johnny's spirituality was central to everything he did. He often credited the Holy Spirit with guiding him through life's most important decisions and leading him to be a vessel of God where there was a need. Whether it was in Gary, IN, where he served as Deputy Sheriff under Mayor Richard Hatcher, or during his long tenure at Midwest Steel, Johnny's care for others was apparent in his everyday actions.

Johnny faithfully served his country in the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1969. He was nearly deployed to Vietnam and always shared the story of how he was set to leave for Vietnam and the order came that changed his life's trajectory. While his military service was significant, Johnny's real legacy was in the way he treated others — always with kindness, respect, and a generous spirit.

His life's journey led him to various places including Pasadena, CA, Gary, IN, and ultimately to Atlanta, GA, where he spent much of his later years with his family. He loved to tell stories, share wisdom, and provide guidance to his nieces, nephews, and extended family. Family gatherings were never complete without Johnny, who would often dominate the card table, playing Spades or Bid Whist and laughing joyfully as he did. His hugs were always accompanied by the scent of cologne, and his sharp style became a trademark of his confident and charismatic personality.

Johnny was a man of endless love for his family and friends, and he was always there when needed, no matter the distance. While in Atlanta, GA, he later reunited with a former love from his twenties, Bobbie Allen, creating new memories and laughter, just as he had done throughout his life.

Johnny is preceded in death by his wife, Terry Lige-Morgan; parents, Sallie Mae and Coleman Morgan; brothers David and Andrew Morgan; sisters Annie Ruth Smith, and Mary Etta Eve.

He leaves to mourn his children, Ty Morgan (Gwen Moody), Johnny (Linda) Morgan Jr., (with their mother Varnette Jones), Denise Warren, and Jeff Morgan; his partner, Bobbie Allen; his grandchildren, Devin, Tysen, Jalen, and Zora Morgan; great-grandchildren; Vincent Kaiki and Stephen Daiki Morgan, and Kayden Prince Macintosh-Morgan; his beloved sisters, Helen E. Scales, Thelma J. Coutee, and Rev. Dr. Lavenia Sapp; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends who will forever cherish his memory
