With a whisper, Johnnie heard the Lord call his name, he answered the call after eighty years of life on this earth to go home and be with the Lord and all his loved ones that have gone before him. He departed this earth on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 Johnnie Gortman was born on April 6, 1937 to the late Sam and Claudia Gortman. Gortman was educated in the Leesville school system. At a young age, he was baptized at St. Mark Baptist Church in Leesville, SC. After retirement, he returned to SC and became a member of St. Paul Baptist Church in Lexington, SC. Johnnie moved to Long Island, NY as a young man. Later in 2005, he returned to SC. While in New York, he was employed with Nassau County Center in East Meadow, New York where he retired after more than 30 years of service. He leaves to cherish in memory: 6 Children; Arlette Gortman, Many Ann Gortman, Johnnie Gortman Jr (Lorraine), Thomas Gortman (Barbara), James Gortman (Latricia) and Denise Gortman all of Long Island, NY. His siblings Essie Elliot (Richard) of Jacksonville, FL, Ellen Thompson (Tommy Lee) of Lexington SC, and Edith Brunson of Milwaukee, WI; Two sister-in-laws Janie Gortman of SC and Annie Lou Gortman of Washington, D.C. He also leaves his grandchildren, great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Service Information

The family will be accepting friends and wellwishers at the J.H. Robinson Funeral Home located at 701 Hendrix st,.Lexington, SC on Sunday February 25, from 3-7 pm. Funeral services for Mr. Jonnie Gortman will be held on Monday, February 26 3:30PM at St. Paul Baptist Church, W. Main st., Lexington,SC. Viewing will be held from 2-3:30 PM the day of the services at the church.
