Mr. James S. Harris was the first-born son of the late Solomon J. and Ellen Geiger Harris. He was born on July 27, 1947 in Lexington, SC and he entered eternal rest on April 5, 2025.
James attended elementary school through high school at Rosenwald High School in Lexington, SC and was affectionately known as "Tree". While at Rosenwald, he excelled in basketball and played the trumpet in the band. He was a proud graduate of the Class of 1965. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Allen University in Columbia, SC. James honorably served in the United States Army, where he served two tours in Vietnam. Upon discharge he faithfully worked at Westinghouse Nuclear Plant for 38 years and eventually was promoted to Supervisor of the Chemical Lab. He thoroughly enjoyed his professional career and tenure there.
For those that were blessed to know him, you knew that he loved the Lord! He also, tremendously enjoyed witnessing to others about the goodness of God and the importance of receiving salvation. He was a mighty mighty prayer warrior!
Additionally, he enjoyed fishing, traveling, family gatherings, and if there was any music close by; he stayed on the dance floor!
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death in by his first wife Mildred Hayes, Grandson Korey Grant, Sister Shirley Harris Smith, Brother Sherrill L. Harris, elder Sister Vera Geiger Harper, his Aunt ,that raised him, Sarah Harris Lytes and an infant Brother. James leaves a legacy of strength, faith and love.
To forever cherish his memories is his faithful Wife Hermayonne Harris of Columbia, SC; His daughter, Kandace (Keith) Grant of Charlotte, NC; his Son James Kevin Harris of Charlotte, NC. Three Brothers, Shelton J. (Sandra) Harris of Columbia, SC, Willie "Reggie" Harris of Sumter, SC, and Dwight W. Harris of New York. Sister-in-law Shirley Wise Harris of Lexington, SC; Brother-in-law Joesph Harper of Union, SC. Grandson Kamau Grant of Charlotte, NC; Granddaughter Karisi Grant of New York. Stepdaughter; Tori (Gaines H.) Salvant IV; Stepson Lydell M. Day of Columbia, SC. Step-granddaughters Portia T. (Tony S.) Cooper of Lexington, SC and London M. Day of Columbia, SC; Step-grandsons; KD Tavares Jackson of Miami, FL, and Lydell M. Day Jr. Lexington, SC , and Gaines H. Salvant V of Columbia, SC. Additionally, he was reared as a brother with his cousins, the Lytes family/children, and there are a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and relatives.
