ESSIE LEE DEVAULT was born on February 17, 1922 to the late Willie Dent Sr. and Mary B. Dent in Gilbert, SC. She was called home to be with the Lord on March 10, 2014 at Azalea Woods Nursing Home, surrounded by her loved ones. Essie Lee was educated in the public schools of Lexington County. She was married to the late L.J. DeVault, and together they had two daughters and two sons (one son died at birth). Essie Lee and her family moved to New Jersey in the early 1950's. She was employed by a clothing company and also worked in domestic housekeeping. In the early 1980's , she retired and relocated back to her home town of Gilbert, SC to assist in taking care of her elderly parents. She was a faithful member of Spring Hill A.M.E. Church, where she gave her life to Christ and served on both the Usher Board and Senior Citizens Ministry. In 2006, she was awarded "Woman of the Year", by the Spring Hill Women's Club. She is best remembered for her love of cooking and kind heart. She never liked to gossip and would let those who did, know that gossiping is never acceptable in the eyes of the Lord. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Jake Dent and Willie Dent Jr.; sisters; Merville Robinson, Florence D. Johnson and Rosalee Mayers; son, Clarence J. DeVault; daughter, Lula B. Winston; grandson, Derrick Darby; son-in-law, Clarence Winston; sister-in-laws, Lula B. Dent and Gennie May Dent; brother-in-laws, L.B Mayers, Earnest Robinson and Simmie Johnson. Essie Lee leaves to cherish a beloved and devoted daughter, Mrs. Azealea D. B. Green and son-in-law, Willie R. Green of Gilbert; seven grandchildren, Denise Davis, Eric Darby, Lareice W. Bigelow, Nicole G. Bigelow, Keith D. DeVault and Veronica S. Glover. Twelve great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews whom loved her very much.

Service Information

VISITATION The family will be accepting friends and welwishers at the J.H. Robinson Funeral Home, 701 Hendrix St. Lexington, SC from the hours of 3 and 7pm. FUNERAL SERVICES Funeral services for Essie DeVault will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2:00pm at Spring Hill AME Church, 228 Windy Hill Ct. Gilbert SC.
